AML Lopes graduated in Physics by the Porto University  in 1998, in 2000 she obtained her Master degree by the same University and completed in 2006 her PhD in Physics by the Aveiro University, within a ISOLDE-CERN joint program at Geneva.

Before her PhD AML Lopes was Medical Physicist Assistant in the Institute of Oncology – Porto and Lectured in the IPVC Institute.

After the PhD she gained postdoctoral experience at ISOLDE-CERN and IFIMUP-IN as a FCT fellow. From 2008 to 2013 she was a researcher at CFNUL- Lisbon University under the FCT “Ciencia 2007” research program. Since 2013 she is a auxiliar researcher at IFIMUP-IN at the Multifunctional Magnetic Materials and Nanostructures group.

AML Lopes was the coordinator of 1 FCT-funded project and she localy coordinates 3 other ongoing FCT projects. She is spokesperson of one and participats in several CERN-INTC proposals and she is spokesperson of a SNS-ORNL proposal.
